Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden voluntarily abdicated in the winter of 1808 when Russia invaded Sweden and Denmark declared war. By early 1809 Sweden lost almost a third of the Swedish realm and a quarter of its population to the Russians. The territory which the Russians occupied is in this modern country.
