Featured Destination of the Week: Sea Lion Caves, Florence, Oregon
By Shirley BertramCalifornia natives know all about their own state’s golden shoreline and picturesque national parks, but one often overlooked point of interest, found just a few miles across the state border, is the Sea Lion Caves in Oregon. Here, visitors can view these magnificent creatures from the safety of underground viewing windows. According to one tourist’s account, “The Sea Lion Caves provide an opportunity to truly see how these animals act in their natural habitat. I found it mesmerizing.” The caves, which have been receiving visitors for more than five decades, are entered via use of an elevator underground.
-[1]- Located near the coastal town of Florence, the caves are easily accessible from the main highway and feature many signs offering wildlife information, making this an ideal destination for the whole family during the school holidays. -[2]- Visitors should book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, as the caves can become quite crowded during peak tourist seasons. Jackets are advisable because the temperature drops considerably underground. I would also suggest arriving in the morning, as the sea lions are often at their most active during this time.
-[3]- After watching the sea lions feasting on fish, visitors are bound to feel hungry themselves. The nearby Caves Restaurant provides budget-friendly options, with plenty of seafood and vegetarian choices. It also boasts an extensive dessert menu. -[4]- This is particularly true for those with young children.
