He was born and raised in a family of social-democrats and later helped found the Communist Party. In 1960 he became head of the National Defence Council, which gave him enough power to initiate the construction of the Wall, with Soviet permission of course.
The Berlin Wall was one of the most modern and best guarded borders in the world. The list of obstacles that formed the Wall is quite terrifying. What was the color of the later one?
Rudolf Urban died on 19 August 1961, becoming the first one of the estimated 239 victims of the Wall. The last person was shot by the guards just two weeks before firing orders were withdrawn. What was his name?
Just two days after construction of the Berlin Wall began, the first East Berliner escaped, jumping over the barbed fence. Some of the daring attempts to flee the Republic were really amazing; before the frontier barrier was fitted with vertical bars, nine people escaped from East Berlin in a small sports car, driving under the barrier. Do you know what kind of car it was?
Aproximately 5000 East Germans escaped throughout the 28 long years.
