Storeymoore Theater Company Debuts

For Immediate Release (June 22) - The Storeymoore Theater Company (STC) concluded its last season with a successful run of its highly-praised stage comedy The Big Family Reunion. The production, which brought in the biggest crowds in the company's history, included post-performance panel discussions on the play's topic - the joyful aspects of family gatherings. These lively conversations led the STC's public relations director, Gloria Chatham, to come up with the idea of developing an audio podcast in which the company's crew members talk about the creative processes in theater. -[1]-. The first episode, titled "Why Design Matters," was posted on June 19. It features an engaging conversation between Hal Brady, the costume designer for The Big Family Reunion, and Michelle Lindley, the play's stage designer. -[2]-. Heritage museum showcases memorabilia from everyday life

HAZLETT VIEW - The Keeler Heritage Museum has been called "a hidden gem" by visitors who have explored its huge collection of vintage treasures. The museum is home to more than 30,000 items, displayed in four massive buildings on a repurposed farm complex. The exhibits represent the personal collection of Marvin Keeler, a lifelong resident of Hazlett View who has been gathering up local memorabilia since his childhood. Today, he is often seen relaxing in the museum's garden pavilion, where visitors can try their hand at operating the antique farm equipment on display. "It was Mr. Keeler's dream to start a museum," said facility manager Julia Halstead, who now leads tours for small groups.

The museum's exhibits and historical timelines cover a variety of aspects of daily life in the region. Part of the museum shows off memorabilia from local industries, including an intact seating booth and service counter from Centralia Diner, which Mr. Keeler owned and operated until his retirement. A wide range of other historical items are on exhibit, from antique printing presses to old school uniforms. Exploring the museum, many visitors connect the exhibits with their own memories of past times.

The museum is located at 1100 Ridge Road, just outside the small town of Hazlett View. It is open seven days a week, from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. Visitors should set aside three or more hours to view all of the museum's objects in a leisurely manner. The museum also offers a membership program that allows access to a range of special events. The quality of the food at Alerro's Bistro is good, but it could be better considering the prices that are charged. I ordered a tofu burger ($13.00), a bowl of mushroom soup ($7.00), cross-cut fries ($8.00), and a "farm special" salad plate ($9.00). Everything was reasonably tasty. There are several healthy salad options, but for some reason the taco salad was removed from the menu. I've had it here before and wish it would be brought back. In general, the food here would appeal to health conscious diners who are not concerned with fancy artisanal food preparation. The most positive part of my visit was the responsiveness of the staff. Even though the small dining room was busy when I visited, I waited less than a minute for a server to arrive at my table.

• Stenley City contracts with Grunby Industries Co. (GIC) to collect waste from all parts of the city. Non-recyclable waste is first taken to the Stenley City Transfer Facility (SCTF) on the city's north side, and then transported to a landfill. All recyclable material is sent to the GIC-managed recycling facility for on-site processing. Recyclable waste must be placed by the curb before 6:00 A.M. on your designated recycling pick-up day each week. The city provides every home and business with one (1) of each type of bin for recyclables:
• Blue for household recyclables, including cans and bottles
• Red - for compostable yard waste, such as weeds and leaves*
• Green - for all other yard waste, including branches and tree limbs
• Yellow - for electronic waste, including computers and peripherals, mobile phones, and electrical accessories

*Pick-up available from mid-March to mid-December

New mobile application: Mr. Morro announced that the Recycling Reminder mobile phone app, created by GIC (Grunby Industries Co.) specifically for city residents, will go live on Friday, May 1. Ms. Woo, the lead developer of the app, gave a demonstration on navigating its features. Mr. Morro confirmed that the weekly recycling pick-up schedule will be divided into the following sectors: Zone I (residences with "North" addresses) - every Tuesday; Zone 2 (businesses with "North" addresses) - every Wednesday; Zone 3 (residences with "South" addresses) - every Thursday; Zone 4 (businesses with "South" addresses) - every Friday. The first pick-up dates for the month will be May 5, 6, 7, and 8 for Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively.

New manager has new marketing plans for Birley Hotel

Located on Frontage Road, which separates Dahlman and Henley Counties, the 200-year-old Birley Hotel is surrounded by shaded gardens and offers a relaxing stay for guests.

During my visit, facility manager Monica Hu told me she has ambitious marketing plans for the hotel, which is owned by local entrepreneur Dan Crosby. Mr. Crosby hired her late last year to allow him to focus more on his growing, three-year-old café business.

As we talked, I mentioned that the hotel's Web site did not fully represent the facility's luxurious amenities. She smiled as she picked up a tablet device and pointed out a page on the newly-redesigned site showcasing images of each beautifully-decorated guest room. She then discussed her efforts to promote the hotel as a launch point for exploring Henley County, which boasts many attractions but receives far fewer visitors than Dahlman County. She says the hotel's new brochures encourage visitors to "experience Henley County."

Ms. Hu said she also plans to rework the Birley's dinner menu to include options to "match every budget." Currently, its gift shop sells artisanal herbs and spices created by Mr. Crosby.

Exploring Henley County

Birley City - Recently, I stayed at the Birley Hotel and explored the charming attractions of Henley County. The hotel's manager put me in contact with Brian Kuzo, president of the Henley County Tourist Association (HCTA), and he guided my daylong tour of the county. It began with a delicious breakfast at Lite Bistro, one of several highly-rated restaurants located near the hotel. We then stopped at Grayley Town, a famous arts community, and toured Paxton Park historical village. The highlight of the trip was a narrated cruise down Paxton Canal in an open-air barge. Mr. Kuzo showed great enthusiasm for the region, and I highly recommend seeing its many sights.
