Excitement, Controversy Surround
Tourism Board Contest
The Haspanton Tourism Board has caused a stir with its latest event, the “#MyHaspanton Contest” The contest offers $1,000 to the person who creates a short video that best embodies Haspanton. Videos must be posted to the social media platform Shoutster and tagged with “#MyHaspanton.” The winner will be determined by a combination of the number of “Likes” that each video receives and votes to be submitted by members of the tourism board.
The contest was dreamed up by Ella Forte, the board's newest member as well as its only one under 35. In a phone call yesterday, Ms. Forte said the contest “makes use of both technology and Haspanton's greatest resource—its people.” It has certainly been met with enthusiasm from Shoutster users. Nearly 80 videos have been posted so far, and they have garnered more than 10,000 “Likes” in total.
However, not everyone is pleased with the contest. At last week's city council meeting, local restaurant owner Emest Mathews complained that the board was essentially ignoring the ideas of anyone who does not use Shoutster. “Most of my customers are seniors, and none of them are on Shoutster,” he said. “The side of Haspanton that is represented in this contest is too narrow”. In response, Council Member Juanita Padilla said she would urge the board to consider multiple participation methods for future promotions.

As you all know, Ms. Noolan hired me earlier this year to be Noolan Software's first full-time human resources employee. One of my duties is looking at our overall situation from a personnel perspective, and now that I have been here for a few months, I have developed some suggestions for improvements. As a small business that hopes to grow into a larger one, it is important that we provide working conditions that attract and keep talented employees.
One important consideration is workload. We should be checking in with employees regularly to ensure that their tasks can be completed in a standard workweek. If your department's workload becomes too heavy, please set up a meeting with Ms. Noolan and me to discuss adding more personnel.
Similarly, employees should feel comfortable taking sick time when needed and using their full allotment of vacation days. This is an important way of protecting their health and morale.
Finally, please allow employees some flexibility in their hours as long as they meet their performance targets. While we are not yet able to support remote work, we can at least empower our employees to manage their own schedules within reason.
All of you, Ms. Noolan, and I will meet on Thursday at 10 AM. to talk about the contents of this memo. Please note that Ms. Noolan has already given her approval of my recommendations, so the meeting will not be an opportunity to debate them. Instead, we will focus on how best to achieve them. Free Autumn Concert Series
Every Thursday evening from September through November, the center offers a free concert in the Ervin Amphitheater, its most intimate performance space. The series, which is carefully planned to represent a variety of genres, is an excellent chance to see established musicians and discover exciting new ones.

(February 7)- A Waymarr convenience store is coming to Denold City.
The city's Economic Development Committee (EDC) unanimously approved Waymarr’s plans to construct a 4,600-square-foot convenience store, which will feature a tiled canopy above its 12 gas pumps. It will be built on a plot of vacant land on Milden Drive, near Route 7, and remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
To operate the store, the company will have to comply with the city’s noise and traffic reduction regulations. Among other things, it will not be allowed to accept deliveries via heavy trucks between 1:00 A.M. and 5:00 AM., with the exception of gasoline. Trucks will also be unable to access the store from Milden Drive, so Waymarr will build a private road leading to the store's receiving area.
Approval came after a public meeting that included presentations by the company’s own traffic engineers. The residents in attendance voiced a mixture of support and opposition. Betty Timpano, who lives on the 400 block of Milden Drive, said she liked the idea of a convenience store in the neighborhood but had concerns about increased traffic along nearby Ramona Way. As evidence, she showed a digital Video she had shot from her car window during rush hour. It showed heavy vehicle congestion on Ramona Way near Brook Street.
On the other hand, resident Steve Grossick said he would welcome the store because it would provide a “quick, warm bite to eat after work. Currently, the nearest convenience store is a Weisbold Plus shop on Laurel Street, about three Kilometers away.
Dear Editor,
As a lifelong resident of Denold City, T was grateful for your February 7 report on the planned Waymarr convenience store. However, the article contained some incorrect information. The digital video I presented at the public meeting was a recording of congested traffic on my street of residence.
Also, I would like to remind you that two citizens voiced concerns about the modem design of the store. I agree with them that we must try to retain our city's distinctive architectural character. New buildings should, if possible, blend in with our historical structures.

Arabic Language Exam To Be Administered in Cobshaw

COBSHAW (May 13)- The National Foreign Language Association (NFLA). a non-profit organization committed to advancing Americans’ competency in languages other than English, will begin offering its Arabic language proficiency test in Cobshaw. The Test of Competency in Arabic (TOCIA) will be administered twice a year starting this July.
Ken Reed, an NFLA official, says the decision was an easy one to reach. “We noticed that there have been a lot of test-takers
coming from the Cobshaw region.” He believes that this is thanks to the University of Cobshaw's Arabic language program. The program also, he says, supplies local people qualified to administer the test, as such work requires some knowledge of the language. The TOCIA consists of a 50-minute listening section and a 70-minute reading section. The first exam will be held in the university's Duckett Auditorium, though Mr. Reed says other venues may be added if there are over 150 test-takers. Registration, which costs $40, must be completed online at www.nfla.org/tocia by 5 P.M. on June 4.
